Fit for 55: An opportunity for the road transport industry?

There are only a few days left to register for the #IRUEUConference on 8 December. The IRU EU Conference “Fit for 55: An opportunity for the road transport industry?” is the leading political road transport event in Europe.

Join IRU, with leading figures from EU institutions, national authorities, shippers and the wider road transport industry, to debate two fundamental questions:

- Will Fit for 55 deployment be adequately synchronised, so that policy, vehicle technology, alternative fuels and infrastructure are ready for steep change over the coming decade?

- How can road transport operators and the wider industry be incentivised to invest and embrace change?

The European Commission’s Fit for 55 proposals aim to reduce CO₂ emissions by 55% by 2030, accelerating the EU’s plan to fully decarbonise by 2050.

The plan will have profound implications for commercial road transport, particularly regarding alternative fuel infrastructure, energy taxation and incentives, and emissions trading.

Amidst general concerns on increasing costs for mobility and logistics operators to 2030 and the lack of convenient alternatives, what are the opportunities for the sector?

The transition will require a vast collective effort over the coming decade: more than 900,000 transport companies in the EU, running over 7 million heavy-duty vehicles, are affected. More than 80% are small and medium-sized firms.

The sector is committed to decarbonising, but public policy, actions, and investment need to be carefully synchronised to work appropriately. Road transport operators need incentives to invest and adapt.

Located in Geneva, Switzerland, IRU is the world road transport organisation, promoting economic growth, prosperity and safety through the sustainable mobility of people and goods.

This year the conference will be a virtual event. Programme and speakers bios are available on the event website specially dedicated to this must-follow event.
