Fertilizing the future: the European industry's quest for stability and food security
The past year has been a tumultuous journey for global and EU commodity markets, including energy, agricultural products, and fertilizers. The industry has been hit hard by the triple threat of the post-COVID recovery, energy crisis, and Russian aggression in Ukraine.
The fertilizer industry has been dealt a devastating blow by the skyrocketing gas prices, which makes up a staggering 90% of the variable costs in fertilizer production. This has made it nearly impossible for many European producers to keep their doors open, resulting in temporary production curtailments.
Despite these overwhelming challenges, the European fertilizer industry has remained determined to supply quality fertilizers to EU farmers and ensure long-term food security.
Fertilizers Europe, the industry association, has been working tirelessly to raise awareness of the industry's challenges and call on key decision-makers to take action. Their efforts paid off in March 2022, when the European Commission stepped in with targeted initiatives to address the stressed market situation in agriculture and the fertilizer sector, providing a glimmer of hope for the industry.
