Empowering European Industry: The Success Story of “Factories of the Future”

“FoF – Factories of the Future” is a pivotal public-private partnership under the European Union, bolstered by the Horizon 2020 research programme. This initiative strives to elevate the sustainability and competitiveness of European industry, which is fundamental to the continent’s economic framework—stimulating growth and safeguarding jobs—and the partnership champions this by aiding European manufacturing enterprises in enhancing their technological foundations.

Led by the industry and involving a consortium of small, medium, and large enterprises, universities, research institutions, and associations from across Europe, “Factories of the Future” engages in pre-competitive, cross-border projects. These projects focus on pioneering production technologies across various sectors.

EFFRA is critical as the spokesperson for the private entities within the “Factories of the Future” PPP. Inaugurated by President Barroso in 2009 as part of the European Economic Recovery Plan, this PPP represents a substantial joint investment approaching €1 billion. It facilitates pre-competitive European research on production technologies through expansive, pan-European consortia.

Founded by the MANUFUTURE Technology Platform alongside leading European industries, EFFRA is a not-for-profit, industry-driven association. It fosters the development of innovative production technologies, and its membership comprises major industrial companies, SMEs, research organisations, and associated bodies.
